Marketing is notoriously difficult to get right. Moreover, if you get it wrong it can be very costly. We have included some marketing tips below to help you but if you need more advice you can always ask a marketing consultant for further help.
Complete and use a Marketing Plan
Marketing plans are much more than a means of securing investment or funding, they are extremely useful documents to help your business grow. Click for more information on marketing plans
Honestly Assess Your Business or Idea
Some people have poor business ideas and waste fortunes pursuing their business dream. Other people, on the other hand have fantastic ideas but never pursue them because they don't have confidence that they will work. In both the above scenarios a marketing plan would help. It would help the person with the bad idea realise the pitfalls, and it would give the person with the great idea the confidence to pursue it.
Get a Second Opinion
Once you have a marketing plan show it to someone whose judgement you trust. It doesn't have to be a banker, accountant, or investor; Not every banker knows a good business idea when they see one. In fact many business successes were previously declined funding or investments. Sometimes a good person to ask is just someone you know who has a small but profitable business. It is better to ask someone with some business experience rather than just a friend or family member with no business knowledge, for all you know you may have a fantastic idea and if the person you talk to doesn't have a head for business they may just talk you out of it!
Think Before You Jump
Many businesses fail because people jump headfirst into a project. without working out a proper plan or strategy. Even once you have completed your marketing plan you should think carefully about how you are going to achieve each point on your action plan. E.g. if one of your action points is to commission a website, you need to think very carefully about how best to do this. For example most web companies specialise in web design but not the actual structuring of your website to best optimise and boost business for you. Ideally you should use a specialist internet marketing expert to advise you.
Assess All The Options
Some companies just use one or two marketing methods. They make strike it lucky and develop a successful business. However, a lot of companies which fail to explore all the options fail. You need to find out what options are open to you and how effective they are. If you are unsure you should ask a marketing consultant, or a specialist internet marketing consultant if your queries refers to web marketing
Monitor Your Marketing
If you don't monitor your marketing properly you could be throwing money down the drain. E.g. you may have an advertisement which you know worked for the first month so you continue to place it every month. Orders arrive regularly so you continue to pay for the advert. However, if you have other advertisements elsewhere how do you know that your original advert is still bringing in business? The answer is that you don't unless you monitor it.
